Botox and Fillers - What You Need to Know
So, what's the deal with Botox and Fillers -what is the difference and what purpose do they have in your face ?
Are you starting to feel like the only one not getting Botox or fillers when chatting with your friends?
Should you get Botox? Is it right for you—and do you really need it?
Let's Break it down
First and foremost, I am not an aesthetic injector. However, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some incredibly talented injectors over the years, and I can confidently say that—with the right practitioner—you can achieve beautifully subtle enhancements. I’ve also learned to recognise when my treatments can only take a client so far and when something more advanced may be worth considering.
What is Botox ?
Botox is a brand name for Botulinum Toxin - when injected into the face will temporarily paralise the muscle, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by blocking signals that cause muscle contractions. This is generally used in the upper portion of the face ( forehead, middle of the brows and crows feet ). It can also be used in the lower portion of the face the give more definition to the jaw. In special circumstances it will also be used in palms of the hands and underarms to stop excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis).
What is Filler ?
Filler is used to add volume to specific areas of the face, most commonly the cheeks and lips. It is primarily made of hyaluronic acid, which acts as a humectant to draw moisture into the treated area. There’s a wide range of supporting ingredients and different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, each offering unique aesthetic outcomes.
Do I need it ?
As I have been looking after women and their aesthetic desires for many many years now - this often comes up in conversation and within my consultations. Many of you are left wondering if this is something you need to have done to look more youthful. To each individual - it's quite subjective, so here is my take on it.
Some people feel very apprehensive around injectable procedures - feeling that they may end up looking overdone and frozen - trust me ( as I have seen it for myself ) with the right aesthetic injector this will not be the case. Do you need to have these procedures - that's dependable on what outcome, time frame, budget and personal preference you are working with. I'll always be very open with what outcomes you will achieve with advanced skin treatments vs injectable procedures.
A disappointed client is never an outcome I want, which is why, during the consultation process, I always provide a clear overview of all the options available and how they will help you achieve your desired aesthetic goals.
Choosing the Right Practitioner
However, definitely do not take your decision lightly when it comes to choosing the right person for you - word of mouth, Google Reviews, social media pages and consultation are all extremely insightful when it comes to choosing the right person. In the UK the field of injectables is still very unregulated, so don't be shy to ask about relevant qualifications and experience.
So when should I start ?
You may be in your 30's and wanting to just add some subtle preventative measures at this stage - or in your 60's wanting to soften deep lines and increase volume where is has been lost. Every person ages differently - you have intrinsic ageing ( these are your blessed genetics!) and extrinsic ageing ( this is your lifestyle - sun exposure, smoking , stress, daily habits, alcohol ). For some, ageing of your skin will occur a little sooner and for others they only show visible signs of ageing when they hit 50 ( lucky for them !). Then you have personal preference - for many - they quite simply do not want to go down the route of injectables, it's not something they want to explore and have their own personal views on them. For others, it's an absolute no brainer- smoothed face and plumped skin in a few treatments - sign me up !
Advanced Skin Treatments and Cosmetic Enhancements
As I mentioned - I am not an aesthetic injector, I am an advanced facialist and Health Coach. When it comes to treating my clients skin I use various modalities and formulations to encourage the skin to work at a more optimal level. From peels to Firming Peptide Masks to Liquid Bio Microneedling -
This is where I have a lot of fun, decreasing pigment , refining texture, increases hydration levels, enhancing your own natural collagen supply, reducing redness - the list goes on. These are skin conditions that you generally won't be able to change with injectable procedures.
There comes a point when I have an honest conversation with my client about what’s realistically achievable with their skin. If there’s a significant loss of volume and deeper structural lines, treatments like Botox or filler may provide a more noticeable result than, say, a course of liquid needling. That said, you don’t have to choose one over the other—combining both can be the ultimate approach, addressing skin health while also supporting the structural changes that come with ageing.
Conclusion
Whether you’re new to the world of injectables or a seasoned pro, I hope this has provided you with valuable insights into Botox and fillers—making the process feel a little less daunting. I’m always here to discuss your options and help guide you toward the best solution for achieving the results and confidence you deserve.
